This guide explains the practical steps a learner can take to move towards a safety officer role in site and contractor environments.

Suggested Pathway

1. Build basic HSE knowledge: hazards, controls, PPE, permits, emergency arrangements and incident reporting.
2. Learn site documentation: risk assessments, JSA / JHA, toolbox talks, permits, inspection records and corrective actions.
3. Develop key topic confidence: work at height, confined spaces, lifting, scaffolding, heat stress, fire safety and excavation basics.
4. Gain practical site exposure under supervision where possible.
5. Prepare a simple HSE CV showing training, site experience, inspections, communication skills and examples of corrective actions followed up.
6. Practise interview questions linked to site hazards, permits, heat stress, work at height, emergency response and reporting.
