Heat stress can affect workers quickly in hot climates, especially during physical work, fasting, poor sleep, high humidity, PPE use or lack of acclimatisation. It is not only a comfort issue. Heat illness can become serious and workers may not recognise their own symptoms early enough.
Plan heat controls before the shift
Heat stress control should start before work begins. Consider weather, humidity, work rate, PPE, shade, rest, hydration, worker fitness and acclimatisation.
- Check forecast and work conditions.
- Plan rest breaks and shaded recovery.
- Adjust heavy tasks where heat risk is high.
Understand early warning signs
Early signs may include heavy sweating, headache, dizziness, cramps, unusual tiredness, poor concentration, nausea, irritability or confusion. Behaviour change can be an important warning sign.
- Train workers to report symptoms early.

- Supervisors should watch for changed behaviour.
Use hydration properly
Water is important, but hydration must be planned and encouraged. Workers may avoid drinking if water is far away, toilets are difficult to access or supervisors do not support breaks. Electrolytes may be needed depending on work and site arrangements.

- Encourage regular small drinks.
- Support rest and toilet access.
Control work rate and exposure
Reducing heat exposure may involve changing work timing, adding shade, rotating workers, using mechanical aids, reducing pace or moving heavy work to cooler times. PPE can increase heat load and should be considered in planning.

- Use shade, ventilation or cooling where possible.
- Review PPE heat burden.
Acclimatise new or returning workers
Workers new to hot conditions, returning from leave or starting heavy work may need time to adapt. Do not assume experience in one climate or previous job makes a person acclimatised today.
- Introduce workload gradually.
- Monitor new starters and returning workers closely.
- Use buddy systems during early exposure.
Respond quickly to suspected heat illness
If heat illness is suspected, stop the work, move the person to shade or a cool area, seek medical help according to site procedure and begin cooling measures where trained to do so. Do not send an unwell worker back alone.
- Stop work and inform supervision.
- Move to shade/cooling and monitor.
- Escalate to medical/emergency response when symptoms are serious.
